If I want to use my MacBook Pro and my tv to play my laptop on my Samsung HDTV, do I need just an HDMI cab?

Laptop to hdtv through hdmi cable – very strange problem?

Other information: I recently had to reformat my hard drive so perhaps I am missing a driver or whatever it is (don’t know this stuff). I did get my NVIDIA video driver though so that is not the problem…
Also it used to work fine on both displays before I had to reformat my hard drive so it seems I am missing something I had then. Though I am playing a different format (Real Video player) than I did before (VLC and Windows Media Player). If I try to open this Real Video format video in VLC, again I get the sound (through my 5.1 speakers) but no video

I have a 52″ Samsung HDTV 1080p Capable and I have my XBOX360 set to 1080P and whyen I play some games only if I pay close attection to it I can see these Scalelines in behind the picture? please helkp me fix this? How do I perfect this?
I have a HDMI cable and took it off it made my image look out of place and the sound as tiny!
